I have decided to try a little fun thing with the family this year. We have started a practice of naming your year.
Often times people will have specific words, vision boards, mantras (guilty – a previous post) to aide to help them focus on their goals and intentions for a specific period of time. Last year I was so inspired by Shea from Conversations with My Sister who has been practicing “Name Your Year” for several years now. When she first mentioned to me that she did this I thought it was so cool. I met Shea during her “Less is More” year. I was lucky because I got to see it in action. Her family’s decision choices as it related to “Less is More” was impressive. I could see the positive impact it made.
Being inspired by this, I decided to incorporate into my life. I got the family involved as I wanted us to share this experience. Something that encourages discussion amongst all of us. A new habit that inspires growth, positivity and joy.
Intention is meant to guide you. It gives you something to strive for. Naming your year helps give motivation and inspiration but also provides direction.
Is it hard? No. Super easy. We started mid January but you can start anytime. We discussed over a few meal times with very colourful ideas that produced suggestions such as Our Year of Candy, Our Year of Disney, Our Year of Minecraft. Eventually we all agreed on “Our Year of Adventure.”
What does that mean for us? Well from the outside with 3 kids it may look like we are adventurous (and believe me no two days are the same) but really we are homebodies. We tend to put off travel or say no to events or activities that require us packing all 3 kids up. It’s just easier. The problem with that is we have a lot of thing that we do want to do but time flies by so fast. We found that six months had gone by without really doing anything we talked about doing.
It’s so easy to think that you will get around to something but never actually get around to it. Initially we were hoping that this would be the motivator and decision maker when planning our activities. We are currently based in Zurich with so many exciting places to visit. If we make this Our Year of Adventure won’t it help us actually do the things we say we want to do? As it turns out – YES!
What does this mean for us? It means we need to get out and visit somewhere new or do something we haven’t done before. It can be as elaborate as a weekend away or simply visiting a park we have never been to before. All of which would be a new adventure for us.
Has it worked so far? Probably more than we have anticipated. Everyone is on board. It has been a few months since we started and so far, so good. We are trying new things, going on hikes and visiting parks. It can include really exciting plans and sometimes it means just getting in the car, driving out and exploring the country we live in. I have already found it backfiring on me….but in a good way. When I don’t like an idea or suggestion of what to do on a weekend, someone in the family (it used to be just my husband but now the kids pipe in) “but it’s Our Year of Adventure…..”
Is it worth it? Yes. Definitely. We have done it as a family but you can do individually if you choose to. Why not try for the remainder of the year? See if it has a positive impact on your actions. I am sure that it will.
Have you ever Named Your Year before? If you were to start right now – in this moment – comment down below what you would Name Your Year.
Big thanks to Shea for inspiring me to do this. Give Shea a visit over on Conversations with My Sister and find out how she keeps it REAL.
